“The Communist Attack in the Cavern”

- Vietnam -

(A cavern with stalactites. Pixabay. Free images.)
Sheng and his friends arrived in the large cavern where Guang Yan’s group was encamped. They had quickly squeezed through the narrow, winding gallery which passed through solid rock. The cavern ceiling high above them was blanketed by a cloud which miraculously radiated light through it and illuminated the entire cavern and a cluster of tents below.

Guang Yan, an elderly Chinese man, was sitting on a folding chair before a campfire with his eyes closed and his hands lifted up to Heaven. Around the fire were Christians seated or standing and closing their eyes in prayer.

Right behind Sheng and his friends, a group of 15 PLA soldiers and their commander, Lieutenant Wei, was in hot pursuit of the Christians. The soldiers were walking quickly through the first cavern Sheng and his friends had entered, but none of the Chinese soldiers had reached the winding gallery yet. In a couple moments, the first PLA soldier would enter the gallery.*

[* A gallery is a horizontal passageway beneath the earth.]

(A campfire. Pixabay. Free images.)
With his heart pounding, Sheng jogged over to the campfire and past a few rows of tents. He stopped before the crackling flames and all eyes opened to see who it was. Sheng’s friends were not far behind him.

Guang Yan opened his eyes and turned to Sheng, who was breathing heavily. “Sheng, it’s good to see you again,” Guang Yan said, smiling.

“Guang, sir, the PLA have found the base and soldiers are right behind us!” Sheng said, with concern in his face. “What do we do?”

“Where did your friends come from?” Guang Yan said, glancing at the Asian men who followed Sheng.

“God delivered us from the PLA, up in the jungle, and He unlocked our handcuffs,” Sheng said, trembling, “but, now the PLA is after us, and they were shooting at us just moments ago. They were too far away to hit us, but that will soon change. They will be here in no time!”

“Peace, my son,” Guang Yan told the young man, “there is no need to be alarmed. God is watching over us and over this base. He brought you out of captivity, like you said, and so God shall surely deliver us from these soldiers, like He did for Daniel’s friends in the fiery furnace.”

“Sir, they never shot at us like this,” Sonthi, a Thai man, said, looking at Guang Yan. “Will God protect us now?”

As he spoke, the first PLA soldier entered the cavern with the encampment. Right behind him, two other soldiers came out of the gallery and into the expansive chamber. They could clearly see what they had yearned to see for a long time: an encampment of Christians. Capturing them would be easier now that they were all in one place.

The three soldiers moved to the left and another group of three emerged from the gallery and moved to the right. They immediately set up defensive positions behind boulders and trained their guns on the encampment. Six more soldiers emerged and found more defensive positions after they separated into two groups of three men. Their lieutenant and two other soldiers came last.

Lieutenant Wei was slightly surprised to see a large number of tents spread out before him and over a 120 men, women, and children trembling in fear as they stood beside their tents. To him, it looked like a hobo town. Landry was hanging up to dry on clothes lines attached to tent poles and bamboo shafts. Several cooking fires were boiling water in metal pots, but the women attending them had just left moments ago, and had tried to find their children and husbands. Trembling children were clinging to their parents, and some were crying while trying to hide behind their moms and dads. The parents held their little ones close to them and their lips moved silently as they prayed for God’s protection.

‘These Christians have no weapons,’ Lt. Wei thought smugly as he scanned over the large group of people and makeshift structures. ‘They are sitting ducks waiting to be caught,’ he thought as he pressed the talk button on his two-way, helmet-mounted radio.

“These Christians are unarmed,” Lt. Wei said over the radio. “Separate the men from the women and children. Put down any resistance with force, but do not kill them until you have separated the people. Then, I will give orders to kill any who I think deserves to be shot. Move out!”

The twelve soldiers, who had taken up defensive positions behind boulders and large stalagmites, moved out from their positions and switched off their safety tabs on their Type 95 machine guns. They were prepared to kill if they met any resistance. The two soldiers accompanying Lt. Wei then moved toward the edge of the camp, looking for anyone trying to escape.

While this was taking place, the Christians around the campfire were nervous, except for a few who kept their eyes closed and put their trust in God. Guang Yan prayed silently and communed with the Father God, trusting his fears into God’s hands and remembering all the times God had supernaturally delivered him since he had started walking with God.

“The PLA is moving out,” Long said, gasping as he stared at the soldiers. “They’re going to kill us! Or, they’ll torture us to death. One of my close friends was arrested and taken to a police station where he was beaten to death by an especially cruel officer.”

“There is no need to fear,” Guang Yan said confidently. “Remember what happened for Daniel’s friends in the fiery furnace? Or for Daniel in the lions’ den? God protected them. He will do the same for us. Watch and see what God will do.”

“I don’t know if God will really do that today,” Long said to the group. “I mean, we’re in the 21st century. Daniel was around thousands of years ago. I say we fight for our lives!”

Long reached for a small axe which was used for splitting wood.

“He who lives by the sword will die by the sword,” Guang Yan said calmly but with more volume than before as he watched Long testing its sharpness with a finger. “You will only place your own life in danger by such foolishness. Trust in God to protect you, for He said these words in Psalm 91:9-10: ‘[9] The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. [10] And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.’ God will protect us if we trust in Him and His Word.”

As the closest group of PLA soldiers reached the camp, they saw a Chinese man with his wife and three young children beside their tent which rested up beside a wide stalagmite. They were not fleeing since they knew that the only way out of the cavern was back through the winding gallery. The man and woman were praying silently as their children watched with fear in their eyes. A little four-year-old girl clung to a teddy bear and cried.

Then, one of the three soldiers reached out his hand to grab the man’s wife, but his hand suddenly began to change before his eyes. It went from being a normal, healthy hand and began to shrivel and curl up in seconds. The fingers became bony and tightly pressed together until the hand was crippled.* Dropping his gun to the rocky ground, the soldier stared in shock at his withered hand. Unsuccessfully, he tried with all his might to get his fingers to extend outward as they normally should. But, his hand was withered and unable to move.

[* See 1 Kings 13:4. King Jeroboam’s hand withers up (or dries up) when he seeks to harm a prophet of God.]

A different soldier shouted at the woman, “What did you do to him?”

He reached out his hand to grab the woman, but his hand also instantly withered, and he gazed at his hand in complete astonishment. He was shocked to see his hand look like the hand of a corpse.

(A cavern with stalactites and stalagmites. Pixabay. Free images.)
The third soldier raised his gun and aimed it at the family, with the intention of killing them, regardless of his orders to merely separate them. He had had enough. His two comrades were screaming in terror and cursing as they tried to pry open their own withered hands. ‘Clearly, this must be curse put on them,’ he thought.

As the soldier placed his finger against the trigger, his finger suddenly froze in position and began to wither. He removed his finger from the trigger and stared, dumbfounded, at his hand. The effect of withering spread from his finger and down into his hand like a chemical reaction spreading through a reactant.* It stopped at his wrist.

[* A reactant is a substance that participates in and is changed during a chemical reaction.]

The soldier dropped his gun and ran for his life toward the gallery aperture*. Following his lead, nine other soldiers were also fleeing for their lives, and running back the same way they had come.

[* An aperture is an opening or entrance.]

Sheng had seen one soldier approach a little girl to pull her away from her mom, but his hand had instantly become leprous, and he had fled in terror, without touching the child.

Seeing his men fleeing for their lives, the lieutenant, who had been hanging back to observe the event and to make sure no Christians escaped, stepped out from behind his cover and shouted into his two-way radio, “You fools, what are you doing? Why are you running? I ordered you to capture those Christians!”

“They have put a curse on us!” a soldier shouted into his radio.

The rest of his men were not concerned about responding to the lieutenant’s orders. They were hurrying as fast as they could to get into the open, jungle air and call in a medic. Some of the soldiers with withered hands were wondering if the Christians had some kind of nanotechnology which could cause diseases. Others wondered if the God of the Christians had struck them with a plague. Terror had seized them with the thought that whatever was withering their hands could spread to their whole bodies and kill them.

But, unknown to the soldiers, demon spirits had caused their hands to wither. And, this was not because the demons wanted to protect Christians but because they knew that if they wanted to continue to deceive people, they would need to wither the hands of those soldiers.

The lieutenant raised his machine gun and stepped forward toward the Christian encampment, with a deep scowl on his face. He was not going to let some weak Christians intimidate him. ‘These Christians shall die,’ he thought to himself as he cycled his bolt and prepared to fire.

As he reached the edge of the camp, he tripped on a rock, and fell to the ground. Feeling humiliated, he stood up and looked down at the ground. ‘How could I trip over that rock?’ he thought, angrily.

Then, he continued walking quickly, but he tripped again. It was a different rock this time... He stood up and glared at the rock he had just stumbled over. ‘This wasn’t there before. I didn’t see any rock there,’ he thought to himself.

Then, he broke into a run and hurried toward the camp. But, he tripped again, and fell to the ground, banging his knee on a rock and twisting his wrist as he tried to break his fall. Enraged, the lieutenant stood up again, but this time, he stood more slowly than before. And, pain shot through his knee, causing him to grimace briefly.

“Wei, why are you trying to harm My people? Would do you persecute Me?” a calm and powerful voice spoke audibly to him.

Wei turned around, almost dropping his gun, in surprise. He could not see anyone standing beside him, but it sounded as if a man were talking to him from close by.

“Who are you?” Lt. Wei said, glancing left and right.

“I am your God and I am the One whom you persecute,” the voice said gently.

“Lord, tell me who you are,” Lt. Wei said, sensing great authority and also great love behind that voice.

“I am Jesus Christ, whom you persecute,” the voice said. “Wei, I love you and I died for you. Will you become My disciple?”

“You’re Jesus?” Lt. Wei said. “What happened to my men? Why did they run?”

“They ran because I was protecting My people who trusted in Me,” the Lord Jesus said. “I am keeping them from being harmed. If you fight against them, I will protect them from you, but I desire for you to turn to Me for salvation, for only I can save you, and give you life, and give you eternal life, now and forever. Do you want this life? Do you want Me?”

Wei began to feel tears come to his eyes. The person speaking to him was so gracious and so kind, and wiser than anyone he had ever met. He felt deeply convicted of his sins and of all the times he had cheated on his wife and had committed adultery. He would lie to her and tell her he was going to hang out with some fellow officers, but he would instead go to the red light district of his city. He knew he was a wicked man, but he didn’t know how to get out of the bondage he knew he was in. He wanted something more than what he had now, but he didn’t know what it was.

“Lord, how do I receive you?” Wei said.

“Wei, My son, go over to those Christians,” the Lord Jesus said. “They will help you to know the truth. Go and talk to them, and leave your gun behind. And, I the Lord your God have spoken.”

Feeling some fear at the thought of going to his enemy, Wei gulped and clutched onto his gun. But, he realized that Jesus was really talking with him and that Jesus really was real. He knew he needed more in his life than what he had. And, he knew he needed his sins washed away and forgiven. So, he reluctantly set his gun down, and as he did, peace began to enter into his soul.

With this newfound peace, Wei walked toward the encampment. Unlike his men, Wei had no grenades on his person, but he still had a combat knife attached to his belt. However, he completely forgot about it.

Seeing him step into the camp, three men backed away from him a few steps before they noticed that he was unarmed.

“What are you doing here?” a middle-aged Chinese man said nervously.

“Could you tell me how to receive Jesus,” Wei said to the man, whose name was Ping.

Hearing those words, Ping calmed down and gave his fears to God. Then, he said, “Why do you want to receive Jesus? I thought you wanted to kill us.”

Wei looked down at the rocky ground briefly before he looked back at the Christian. “I came here to arrest you Christians, but I saw my men flee in terror. They are crack troops. I still don’t know exactly why they fled, but I know that Jesus told me He is protecting you. I want to be saved. What do I do to be saved?”

‘This is amazing that a PLA lieutenant is eager to receive Jesus,’ Ping thought. Then, he said aloud: “You just confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord; and that He died for your sins to wash them away and make you a new person; and that He rose from the dead on the third day. Then, you are saved. The Bible says in Romans 10:9-10: ‘[9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.’

“Then, look to Jesus to help you walk with Him in holiness and in obedience to His Word. The power of walking in holiness is to choose to forsake temptations, and to seek to have intimate fellowship with the Lord Jesus, and in reading His Word.”

“So, what do I say?” Wei said.

The man said, “You could say something like this, ‘Lord Jesus, I am a sinner. I need your blood to cleanse away all my sins. I believe that you are God the Son and that you died on a cross to pay the penalty for all my sins. I believe that you died and that you rose again on the third day. I believe that salvation is only through you, and not by any works I do. Now, I make you my Lord and Savior. Amen.’”

With that, Wei prayed to Jesus, using his own words. After he was finished praying, Wei didn’t seem to feel much different, but he did notice that his hatred for Christians was gone. Something had happened to him that he couldn’t fully explain, and it was a good thing.

“Strange Snapping Sounds”

- Russia -

Previously

Alexei was in a dense pine forest on the outskirts of the rural logging town of Sikorsky, Russia. He had “illegally” witnessed to a Russian woman in a gas station, and the police had somehow been notified of his conversation with the woman. After he had finished the conversation and was going outside, a police car, with two police officers, had pulled up before the building.

(A forest with a path. Pixabay. Free images.)
Seeing them, Alexei ran toward the woods across a road to the north of the gas station. He reached the tree line before a pursuing officer could tackle him. Charging into the trees and pushing his way through bushes, Alexei managed to escape being caught, since the woods were very dense and difficult to navigate.

Then, God had spoken with Alexei and had encouraged him to trust God and follow His leading. Alexei then noticed a faint trail and had an impression to follow it. He sensed that God was guiding him in that direction. As he was about to head off down the trail, Alexei heard snapping sounds that did not sound like an animal had made them. They came from several yards away within a dense cluster of bushes.

____________________

“Strange Snapping Sounds”

Hearing the snapping sound, Alexei turned his head and stared into the dense undergrowth.  The sea of leaves, twigs, and branches could hide a small army, and if they were all quiet, Alexei wouldn’t know they were present. He stood still and listened intensely to the forest. A few birds chirped in high branches and a red squirrel scampered up a tree trunk. But, the snapping sounds had stopped.

Then, more snapping sounds came. Alexei had no idea who it was, so he tried to slip off the trail and into the bushes to find some kind of hiding spot. He was concerned that someone working for the secret police or the regular police might be searching for him.

Crouching down in the bushes, Alexei waited. In no time, he heard branches rustling and then a man emerged into the open space Alexei had just left seconds ago. Alexei turned to see who it was. The man wore a brown collared shirt and black work jeans to which clung leaves and small twigs. He was clean shaven and appeared to be in his mid-fifties. In one hand he carried a walking stick and in the other hand he had a metal water bottle. Curly brown hair poked out from under a slate black fiddler’s cap on his head, and a dark green backpack was slung over his shoulders.

His face, which looked peaceful and calm, suddenly scrunched up with concern and surprise.

“Oh. I see someone there,” the man said out loud to himself.

Realizing he had been spotted, Alexei sighed and stood up, feeling foolish. “I was passing through this forest,” he said simply. “Do you know how to reach Suvorova Street from here?”

“What are you doing in my neck of the woods?” the man said with a mixture of curiosity and concern. “I own this land? Didn’t you see a ‘no trespassing sign’?”

Alexei didn’t remember seeing any sign. “I didn’t see any ‘no trespassing’ sign,” he said. “But, I’m sorry to walk through your land. I won’t do it again,” Alexei added, apologetically.

Seeing that Alexei appeared somewhat distressed, the man relaxed and extended a hand. “I’m Kostya Bortnik.”

Alexei shook his hand and introduced himself. “I’m Alexei.”

“Alexei, there is no need to worry. I just wanted to know why you were walking through this part of the woods,” Kostya said with less tension in his voice.

Several thoughts raced through Alexei’s mind. ‘Should I tell him the truth that I was running from the police after having witnessed to a lady? If I tell him, he might inform the police. Or, should I just keep silent about that matter and just go down the trail?’

But, Alexei felt God leading him to tell the truth.

Alexei cleared his throat, gave his fears to God, and said, “I was being pursued by the police because I am a non-conformist Christian and I was just sharing my faith with someone when the police came to arrest me. I fled on foot and now I’m here.”

Kostya Bortnik didn’t bat an eyelid or flinch when he heard Alexei reveal his situation. Instead, he looked at Alexei with care and understanding.

“That must be hard, brother…” Kostya started to say.

‘Did he just call me brother?’ Alexei thought to himself.

“I feel for you, Brother Alexei. I am also an underground Christian,” Kostya continued. “I share my faith, but I don’t do it as boldly as I probably should. I’ve mainly printed Gospel tracts and set them out in certain places when no one is looking.”

“I do too,” Alexei said.

Then, smiling briefly, Kostya said, patting Alexei on the back, “It would be nice to have you over for dinner. I have a remote home that the police are not aware of. Come, we can go down this trail and you’ll see how hard my home is to find unless you know what you’re looking for.”

“I also have some friends. They drove off without me when they saw a police car heading toward a gas station.”

“God will lead them to us if we pray about it. Do you have a cell phone?”

“Yes,” Alexei said.

Kostya removed his dark green backpack and quickly unzipped it. Then, pulling out a black, rectangular device that resembled a smart phone jacket (but it was much thicker), he said, “Let me see your cell phone.”

“Why do you want to see it?” Alexei said, wondering if he could trust Kostya.

“I just want to show you something,” Kostya said with an outstretched hand.

With a little reluctance, Alexei handed Kostya his smart phone and Kostya unsnapped a transparent flap in the device and slipped the phone into a hollow space inside. Then, he closed the flap shut and looked at the phone touch-screen through the transparent flap. He began looking through dropdown menus and selecting options. Finally, he looked up at Alexei, who was still concerned about his phone.

“Your phone is now untraceable,” Kostya said, smiling. “Now, you cannot be eavesdropped on or tracked by the government, by satellites, or by hackers. But, you won’t be able to use your internet, camera, or voice recording apps. You can still use text messages and your phone for calling, however. And, that is most important.”

“No internet? My map apps depend on the internet,” Alexei said, concerned. “I won’t be able to use the map apps for planning trips.”

“Phone security has a small price to pay, but it is worth it,” Kostya said. “Besides, you can just use regular paper maps and do things the old-fashioned way. And, better yet, just follow the Holy Spirit. He will make sure you are on track.”

“You’re right,” Alexei said as he took his phone. “This would be wiser than what I was doing.”

“Let’s go to my house,” Kostya said with a slight grin. “You can call your friends and I will give them instructions.”

(A drone flying near a forest. Pixabay. Free images.)
The two began walking down the wispy trail Alexei had seen earlier. As they continued walking, unknown to them, a computer-guided drone was hovering over the tree tops, scanning the trees with a set of sophisticated sensors. Using a complex laser mapping system, and an onboard “artificial intelligence” program, the drone was able to identify humans and use GPS coordinates to pinpoint their exact location.

In no time, the drone captured the shapes of two men walking down a trail through the woods. Even though its visible light cameras could only see trees, its LTM system* could see the men using rapid-firing laser light. Once it flew over them from behind, it would be able to scan their faces and complete a bio-metric identification of each man. The information would be sent to a network of supercomputers owned by the Russian agency of intelligence, the Office of National Intelligence (ONI)**.

[Note: * Regarding the LTM system, read the end note below. ** The Office of National Intelligence (ONI) is a fictional, communist Russian agency, which is the modern equivalent of the KGB.]

Both Kostya and Alexei had had their faces scanned by surveillance cameras months ago. The video footage was analyzed by “artificial intelligence” software, which could identify them based on their drivers’ license photos, which it had access to. While the software and surveillance kept track of everything Kostya and Alexei did electronically and by way of surveillance footage, it had no way of knowing that they had been placing Gospel tracts in various places or that Alexei would secretly deliver Bibles and tracts through his delivery job.

But now, the AI (artificial intelligence) network of ONI was aware of Alexei’s exact location and that it was Alexei who had “broken” the “law” by witnessing to a gas station worker. The drone instantly relayed its information to ONI, and the gears of the intelligence agency began to turn.

... Having been contacted by Kostya and Alexander, Steve, Sarah, and had Jason met up with Alexander, who took them to a primitive, seldom-used road in the forest. They had driven for half a mile on the bumpy, forest road before their cars could go no further since the road reached a dead end. After Alexander and Steve had parked the cars, the group had piled out and followed Alexander up a trail through the woods.

To quell their fears about police following them, Alexander had assured them, before they set off, that the police didn’t know where they were, and that he knew how to spot secret police from a mile away, so to speak.

“Where do you think this Kostya guy lives?” Jason said as he turned back to Steve, who walked beside his wife, behind Jason. ... (Read all of Part 47.)

End Note:

* The fictional LTMS stands for Laser Topography Mapping System. It is a fictional system based on a real laser mapping system called LiDAR, which stands for light detection and ranging. In recent years, LiDAR has been used to create digital, 3-D maps of topography in the Amazon rain forest by flying a plane over the forest at a specific altitude.

A laser fires rapid pulses of light toward to the ground and measures how much time it takes to go from the ground and back to a sensor in the LiDAR. The time it takes for light to travel indicates the altitude of positions below the LiDAR. This system creates a detailed three-dimensional map of the topography below the aircraft. A computer would delete all unnecessary information, such as all plants, until it had a view of the land, minus the trees and shrubs.

The fictional LTM system does not delete any humans or animals from the three-dimensional map it created. By doing so, it could locate the exact positions of humans in the forest below. And, the resolution is slightly greater in the fictional LTMS than in the LiDAR.

Using GPS coordinates, the drone in this story could locate the exact positions of any humans it sees. The information from this fictional LTMS would be sent to soldiers and police officers on the ground so that they could locate people hiding in dense jungles or in pine forests.

Note: The information about LiDAR came from the internet.
