Chapter Fifty

P
ART 50:
➤ "A Communist Attack in the Forest" // ➤ "The Underground Excursion"

____________________

Kostya Bortnik (a Russian), Evgeny and Nadia Yugov (Russians), Steve and Sarah O’Neill (Americans), and Jason Harper (an American) were traveling through a pine forest in southern Siberia and had gone a couple miles from Kostya’s underground bunker when the group of “underground” Christians had heard a distinct sound coming from the woodland undergrowth. Unbeknownst to them, their friend Alexei Khlebov (a Russian) had been captured by communist soldiers shortly after they had left the underground base. And, the communist red army of Russia was now searching in the woods for the Russian and American Christians, determined to either catch or kill them. It is a moonlit night in the southern Siberian forest.

“A Communist Attack in the Forest”

- Russia -

Something had just stirred the dense, dark bushes a dozen yards from Steve. He turned to see what it was, and his eyes widened. A man in camouflage, equipped with grenades, ammo clips and other gear, was slowly pushing through the foliage. He wore a helmet with black optical equipment lowered over his eyes. The optics allowed him to see through foliage and detect animals or humans behind walls or obstructions. Nothing could prevent him from seeing his prey, except for a miracle of God, a lead wall, or a thick metal screen. And, there were no lead walls between the Christians and this soldier.

Corporal Mirov stepped into the small opening where the Christians were, raised his
AK-74M rifle to his shoulder, and said, “Raise your hands, now!”

There was just enough moonlight filtering through the trees for the Christians to make out his form against the shadows of the forest.

Steve froze, feeling fear shoot through his body like electricity through wires. Beside him, his wife Sarah gasped and placed a hand over her mouth. Evgeny reached for his wife Nadia and drew her close to him. Then, he stepped in front of her and looked the approaching soldier in the face, feeling a supernatural calm descend over him. He had encountered life-threatening situations before, like Steve had, and Evgeny was not going to let this be a situation where he would doubt God’s protective power and love.

“I rebuke you in the name of Jesus, the Name that is above all names!” Evgeny said boldly and with calmness that even surprised him.

The soldier glared at Evgeny through his optics and sneered. Then, he said arrogantly, “What Jesus are you speaking of?”

“He is the one and only Jesus Christ. He is your Creator and God, and you will not come any closer,” Evgeny said calmly.

This Christian’s boldness was a little unsettling to Corp. Mirov, but he shrugged off the tingling sensation he suddenly felt passing through his body and took aim at Evgeny. The man’s chest was in his sights.

(A forest at night with some stars. Pixabay.)
But as Corp. Mirov tried to walk forward, but he seemed to run into an invisible wall. Angry, he tried again to move forward, but the invisible object restrained him from moving more than a couple inches ahead. “You Christian fool, this is the night you die!” Corp. Mirov said with hatred in his voice.

Before he could pull the trigger of his AK-74M machine gun, the weapon was suddenly knocked out of his hand by an invisible force. It landed on the ground a few feet in front of him. Enraged, Corp. Mirov tried to run forward, but he could not move. Then, he backed up and shook his head, bewildered at what was going on. ‘Am I going insane?’ he thought to himself.

He reached for a grenade and unclasped it from his belt. Then, he jogged back through the bushes, snapping a few as he went. On the other side, he drew out the safety pin of the grenade, kissed the weapon, and quickly calculated the distance from him to the Christians. Then, he activated the weapon and threw it into the air over the tops of the bushes he had just passed through.

Steve, peeking through the bushes, spotted a black object, which resembled a round rock flying through the air. As it neared the ground, he realized at that split-second that it was a grenade. With adrenaline rushing through his veins, Steve ran in front of Sarah to protect her body from the blast he knew was about to come.

But, the object plopped onto the grass without exploding. Suddenly, it dropped down into a three-inch-wide hole. The next moment, the ground beneath their feet shook and a loud boom came through the hole.

None of the Christians were near the hole when the grenade exploded from within the earth. It was a miracle that the weapon had fallen into the hole, but Steve had thought he saw the grenade land on the ground before tumbling down the shaft. And, strangely, he hadn’t remembered seeing a hole there before.

“My son, Steve, have the group hurry and move into the bushes. I will protect you and keep you safe. The soldiers will soon be upon you,” God’s voice said to Steve’s spirit.

“Yes, Abba God,” Steve said.

Knowing God’s voice well, Steve turned to Evgeny, Nadia, Jason, and Kostya. “We must get into the bushes now. God showed me the soldiers will soon be coming,” Steve said as he motioned for the others to hurry over to him.

Kostya ran over, followed by the Russian couple. Then, Steve and Sarah held hands as they hurried into the bushes. Just as they entered a dense cluster of Siberian peashrubs and juniper bushes, communist soldiers began pushing their way through foliage fifty feet away from Steve’s position. In moments, the communist Russian soldiers had entered the grassy clearing, which was surrounded by many bushes. Some had remnants of snapped twigs in their helmets and uniforms. One soldier spit and cursed under his breath as he began wiping cobwebs from his face.

Private Zimin, and Corporal Mirov, two Russian soldiers, entered the clearing cautiously. They were ready for any surprise that might be coming their way, at least Corp. Mirov was. Zimin was still trying to remove the dusty, bug-filled cobwebs from his face. A few yards away behind them stood Private Belikov, who kept his eyes open for any sign of movement. A grenade would certainly kill some of the Christians, but it wouldn’t kill all of them, he thought to himself. Some may be wounded but still mobile.

As Corp. Mirov looked about the clearing, he saw no sign of the explosion and no scraps of metal or dead bodies. Something was very odd about this. The grenade he had thrown was not a dud, for it had exploded. But, the Christians were gone. Perhaps, they had run for cover the moment he had left the clearing. If so, they would be very close by.

He decided to radio his squad commander, Sergeant Nabatov. Depressing a talk button on his helmet-mounted two-way radio, Corp. Mirov said, “Fox calling Alpha. Over.”

“This is Alpha. Over,” a voice came through Mirov’s earpiece. It was the sergeant.

“Non-conformists have been sighted and attacked. But, they have slipped past us. Over,” Corp. Mirov said.

The voice that came through his earpiece was slightly agitated. “Fox, this is Alpha. I am sending Delta to you. Over.” Corp. Mirov knew this meant that Sergeant Nabatov would be sending another fire team to assist in the hunt for Christians.

“Copy, Alpha. Over,” Corp. Mirov said.

Mirov also knew that the sergeant would not have said it over the radio, but it was obvious that the man was upset with him for allowing the Christians to slip through his fingers.

(A forest. Pixabay.)
“Corp. Mirov,” Zimin said, having removed the cobwebs. “I saw you’d entered the bushes. And, I saw the Christians. Something invisible was preventing you from moving forward. And, something had knocked your gun out of your hand. Was it a ghost?”

“Don’t be stupid,” Mirov snapped as he flipped his helmet-mounted optics up to glare at his subordinate. “It was nothing, do you hear? I don’t want to talk about it.”

Zimin kept his mouth shut, but he began to wonder what had caused his commander to fail at killing or capturing the Christians. It was not natural. Could it be a “ghost”? But, why would a ghost protect underground Christians? Or, could it be an angel? ‘Could it be an angel that had protected them?’ Zimin thought to himself.

“Zimin,” Mirov said as he faced his subordinate.

“Yes, sir.”

“We will no longer try to capture these scum. We will simply kill them. Do you understand?” Corp. Mirov said.

“Yes, sir,” Zimin said, swallowing.

Then, the corporal said, “We will spread out. I am going to put a good 15 meters between myself and you. I want you to keep Belikov at 10 meters from you.* That way, we will have a greater chance of seeing anyone who is hiding.”

[* Note: 15 meters and 10 meters are roughly equal to 49 feet and 32 feet, respectively.]

“Yes sir.”

The fire team commander walked away and vanished into some bushes.

But, Private Zimin felt uneasy about killing Christians. He thought to himself: ‘If an angel had protected them, it would mean that God was for these non-conformist Christians. If so, that would mean that I am on the wrong side.’ And, that thought gave Zimin a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach, knowing that he had orders to kill.

He began to realize that the Gospel message he had read from a confiscated Christian tract a few months ago was real, and that Jesus Christ was a real person, and not just someone that Orthodox Russians recognized. He was someone who protected the banned, underground Church. He had been to Orthodox services before, but he had seen no evidence that any of the Orthodox Russians really knew the living God, the God of miracles. And, the God of miracles was the one Zimin wanted to learn more about, now that he had seen miracles with his own eyes.

But, he still didn’t completely trust non-conformist Christians. He had been told that they were trying to undermine and destroy the government of the new communist Russian empire. He had been taught that these Christians would poison the minds of all Russians to follow Roman Catholicism and seditious activities. But, Zimin began to wonder if all he had been taught were actually true.

“Zimin, do you hear that?” Private Belikov said from a few feet behind him. The soldier had quietly approached Zimin like a cat.

Zimin turned to see his friend, Belikov, pointing toward some dense bushes near the edge of the clearing. Dim moonlight filtered through the trees and partially highlighted some leafy branches among the bushes. Zimin squinted to see what Belikov was pointing at and noticed some of the branches shaking. Someone or something was definitely disturbing the foliage.

Belikov advanced past him toward the bushes and raised his gun. Zimin followed him, walking slowly. His heart was pounding. He knew he had orders to kill, but he wasn’t sure if the being disturbing the bushes was a human or an animal.

As Belikov came within ten feet of the bushes, a muffled gasp and a whimper came from within. It sounded like a man or woman had made the sounds. There was no doubt in Belikov’s mind that this was a Christian.

“You Christians, come out where I can see you,” Belikov said coldly, raising his gun to his shoulder.

“Aren’t you going to notify Corp. Mirov first?” Zimin said, trying to stall for time, feeling guilty about the thought that he would have to kill the Christians. ‘After all,’ he thought, ‘they had done no harm to anyone.’

“Come out now, or I will shoot,” Belikov said a little louder. Then, to Zimin he said quietly, “I won’t notify Mirov now because we can chalk these people up on our kill list. You know the corporal would love to kill them himself.”

Slowly, a woman and a man emerged from the foliage. They were dressed in warm clothing and appeared to be in their early thirties.

“Where are your friends?” Belikov said to them with a wicked glint in his eye.

The couple didn’t answer, but they appeared to be praying silently and trembling a little.

“There is no need to let them live any longer. I have orders to kill, and kill I will,” Belikov said as he raised his machine gun to a firing position.

Just as Belikov was about to reach for the trigger, Zimin suddenly sprang into action. He didn’t know exactly what it was that urged him on, but he knew he couldn’t let the Christians be mowed down. In a split second, he rammed his body into Belikov, knocking him over. Belikov dropped his rifle as he fell to the ground, but his military training kicked in the instant he landed, and Belikov quickly kicked Zimin in the lower legs, knocking him to the ground. At that moment, Belikov knew that his comrade was a “traitor.”

Zimin dropped his gun as he used his hands to stop his impact with the ground. Before he could stand up, Belikov’s fist slammed into Zimin’s stomach, doubling him over. The animal-like rage that appeared in Belikov’s face was so intense it surprised Zimin, who had been Belikov’s friend for a couple years.

Belikov’s left fist shot toward Zimin’s jaw, but Zimin was ready for it this time. He deflected the fist with his right arm and punched Belikov in the stomach with his free hand. The belligerent soldier grunted as the fist struck him. Zimin hadn’t use as much force as Belikov had, and Zimin’s punch merely struck tightened stomach muscles, doing no damage. Then, in a split second, Belikov kicked toward Zimin’s stomach and knocked him to the ground. Wheezing in pain, Zimin tried to stand, but Belikov kicked him in the back, and he rolled over, giving a little grunt.

It was clear that Zimin was losing the fight.

“You fool,” Belikov said between breaths as he watched Zimin clutching his stomach in pain. “I will kill you for this, and then I will hunt down and kill every Christian in this forest. You wanted to stop me from killing them. But, we were ordered to kill them. That now makes you a traitor and dead man. I have every right to kill you now.”

Zimin merely groaned in response as he gritted his teeth. Pain was shooting through his back and stomach.

While the two soldiers had been fighting, Steve and Sarah had been praying. It was Steve and Sarah who had been spotted by the communist soldiers and who had reluctantly emerged from the bushes. Behind them, Kostya, Jason, Evgeny, and Nadia were also praying.

“Lord Jesus, in your Name,” Steve prayed quietly as he watched the fight, “I remit all the sins committed and being committed by those soldiers. And, in Jesus Christ’s name, I take authority over all demon spirits attacking these men. I command your angels to bind up the evil spirits in the name of Jesus Christ. And, I command those evil spirits to go into the abyss, and be locked up there, in Jesus Christ’s name.”

Belikov stooped to reach for an AK-74M machine gun on the ground. Watching him, Zimin swallowed hard. He knew that his life could be ended in a few seconds. He was injured and felt unable to fight anymore. He wasn’t sure if his back was broken or not, but he continued to feel lots of pain spreading through his spine.

As Belikov swung the AK-74M toward Zimin, Steve stepped forward, feeling sudden boldness come upon him. The strong feeling of fear was gone.

Pointing his hand in Belokov’s direction, Steve said firmly, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus Christ.”

Belikov was taken aback at the command. He turned to face Steve with complete surprise in his face. He had never expected an unarmed man to speak that way to him.

“Who do you think you are?” the communist soldier said, glaring at Steve. “I was about to end the miserable life of this traitor, and then take yours.”

“I am a born-again son of God, and I am washed in the blood of Jesus Christ, my Savior. By the authority of Jesus Christ, I command you to lay down your weapon and leave. Now!”

Belilov began to chuckle. Then, he laughed. Then, he began to shake with laughter. “You stupid fool. You think that I have to listen to you tell me what to do? I have a weapon. You have nothing.”

“I have the Word of God,” Steve said. “And, Jesus in Luke 10:19 said: ‘[19] Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.’ And, I believe that.”

The soldier shook his head and grinned wickedly as he aimed his gun at Steve. “I will kill you now, you fool.”

The machine gun roared to life and sent a spray of bullets through the night air as bright flashes erupted from the muzzle. In a fraction of a second, they would reach Steve, Sarah, and the others.

And, as the gun opened fire, Zimin felt fear seize his chest. In a nanosecond, a couple thoughts entered his mind. He knew that after Belikov had killed the Christians, he would be next. Or, he would be tortured to death. Now, the first bullet was just a couple feet away from Steve’s chest. As the bullet closed the distance to 10 inches, something happened.

“The Underground Excursion”

- Vietnam -

(A cavern. Pixabay)
Hu Zheng and his friends were staying with other Asian Christians in a large encampment in a massive cavern beneath a jungle of Vietnam. They were trying to avoid the constant patrols of imperial PLA soldiers working for a new government in China. The Asian superpower had extended its control over all of Southeast Asia and into nearby island nations, including the continent of Australia.

These all now belonged to the Empire of China and were under China’s iron domination. Hu’s group consisted of 12 men: Sommat and Bounkong from Laos; Sonthi from Thailand; Long, Minh, Tien, and Quang from Vietnam; and Wu, Lt. Wei, Sheng, Cheng Yuan, and Hu from China. An earthquake had just caused massive chunks of rock and boulders to break off from the cavern ceiling and crash to the ground. But, God’s protective power had kept any of the rocks from hitting the people within the cavern.

____________________

A line of 12 men from China and Southeast Asia scrambled up some boulders and carefully crawled down the opposite sides of the large rocks, which had recently fallen during an earthquake. Their path through the cavern consisted of weaving around piles of broken rocks and pillar-like stalagmites, and climbing over big, fallen boulders. It was hard work, especially since they all were carrying backpacks and gear.

In a little while, they had reached a 10-foot-wide opening in a wall of the large cavern, which had been their objective since leaving the encampment. It opened onto a natural gallery, or tunnel, through solid rock. Now, upon reaching it, they paused to catch a breath and take some refreshing gulps of water.

Hu Zheng, standing beside the large mouth of the tunnel, detached a metal water bottle from a clip on his belt and took a long drink. Standing nearby was Long also enjoying some life-giving liquid.

“Hu, that is your name, isn’t it?” Long said as he snapped the lid of his water bottle shut.

“Yes,” Hu said after he had swallowed a gulp of water.

“The others from Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos are planning on splitting up with you and taking a different path. They believe that by doing that, we will be less visible to the imperial PLA. But, I was wondering if I could go with your group? I think I know Vietnam pretty well. I can help you find your final destination.”

“But,” Hu said, “God was showing Quang, and Cheng Yuan, and me that He will guide us where to go.”

“Where exactly do you plan on going?” Long said, frowning as he scrutinized Hu’s face.

“To a city of refuge,” Hu said.

“The jungle is infested with PLA soldiers,” Long said, as he looked Hu in the eyes with intensity. “But, I used to work for them as a guide. For a small price, I can help you slip past them. I also know how to talk to them if we ever are spotted. I will make them think all of you are local Vietnamese villagers. If you let me do all the talking, you will be safe, and no harm will come to you.”

“That would be lying. And, I only have a couple banknotes in my wallet anyways,” Hu said.

“Everyone lies from time to time. I’m sure your friends have some more money,” Long said. “I’ll just ask them.”

“Wait,” Hu said. “You don’t understand. God will guide us and protect us, and He doesn’t want us to lie. God said --”

“No need to say any more, my friend,” Long said as he smiled and placed a finger over his lips. “I don’t need any of your money. Just consider my help as a benevolent service.”

With that, Long turned and walked over to Cheng Yuan. A minute passed before Hu slowly approached them and strained to listen to their conversation.

“Long, how much do you want up front?” Cheng Yuan said.

“Oh, not much. We can work out the price later. But, you are willing to have me be your guide?”

Cheng Yuan scratched his chin a few moments before he said, “I will need to think about it. I know that Quang is good at navigating the jungle, and he’s Vietnamese.”

“Yes, but he never was a guide for the imperial PLA,” Long said. “I know how to deal with them, and Quang doesn’t.”

Cheng Yuan sighed before he looked Long in the eyes and said, “Okay. It’s a deal. I’ll pay you a fair price for your guide service now, and then more later on.”

Cheng Yuan pulled out a wallet and flipped through it. Then, he extended a hand holding a few banknotes with denominations unknown to Hu since he was too far away to see the banknotes closely.

Long took the money, smiling almost greedily, and thanked Cheng Yuan.

A few minutes later, Quang spoke to the group of 12. “Men, we are heading into the unknown. So, let us pray and trust God for His divine protection as we head on our way to the city of refuge God’s Spirit is leading us toward.

“We are a fairly large number, so I believe it would be wise for us to split up into at least two or three groups. I will lead one group, since I feel that is God’s calling for me. And, I understand that Tien will lead another group. He is familiar with the jungles of Southeast Asia, and is God’s choice. Who feels God leading them to go with my group? Come forward toward me if you do.”

Hu, Sheng, Lt. Wei, Cheng Yuan, and Long stepped forward and approached Quang.

“The rest of you can be in Tien’s group,” Quang said. “Does that sound good?”

The men nodded their heads and some clapped.

“Our group will go first down this gallery,” Quang said, facing the men not with his team. “Tien, I suggest you have your group wait for three minutes before you begin to move off.”

“Very good,” Tien said.

Then, Quang led the men in prayer. He entrusted their and his protection into God’s hands and prayed for God to safely conduct each group to a city of refuge somewhere in Southeast Asia. Then, the men said their last goodbyes and Quang’s group departed, heading down the gallery passage.

The miraculous light, which had filled the cavern behind them, had not left the group when they had entered the gallery. A glowing, white cloud hugged the gallery ceiling, illuminating their path through the winding passageway. It was the only way they could navigate through the passage since most either didn’t have flashlights, or their batteries were very low.

Hu was glad to be moving again. He enjoyed hiking and seeing new sights. The gallery they had just entered wound on a sinuous course like a river. In some places, it split off into two directions, but at each intersection, Quang stopped and quietly asked God which fork to take. All throughout the gallery were small fissures in the rock walls, miniature stalagmites and stalactites, and jagged rocks.

Hu looked forward to seeing daylight again and breathing the fresh, jungle air.

Before Quang’s group had gone 200 feet* down the gallery, Quang suddenly signaled them to stop and then huddle behind small boulders. Following his orders, the men ducked down and crouched next to the boulders, breathlessly waiting and watching.

[* Or, about 60.96 meters in distance.]

Having too much curiosity to keep his head down, Hu poked his face out from behind a boulder and tried to see what lay ahead. He was in for a big surprise. Hu’s hands began to tremble and his heartbeat increased.

 (To be continued...)

[A special note: I, the writer, am putting this story on hiatus to be continued sometime later. It is not a normal story and does not have a single, cohesive plot. But, I have been working on a new story, which is being published, chapter by chapter, on my blog(s). It is a story with a plot which follows the pattern of "rising action," "conflict," a "climax," "rapidly falling action," and a "conclusion."

You will find it here at this link:

Synopsis

Europe has been invaded, the superpower across the sea is no more, and the country of "Baltania" is controlling Europe through communistic puppet governments. Under the oppressive cloud of communism, a small group of underground Christians faces a powerful crime organization bent on their capture and destruction.

Under this heavy, oppressive cloak, Kevin Kramer, a 30-year-old, and Maritza, his attractive, 27-year-old girlfriend, must decide who they will serve as they fall in love with each other, start a romantic relationship, and try to evade the unrelenting and dangerous members of a criminal organization, which seeks to kidnap underground Christians to sell to the secret police.

Together with some friends, Kevin and Maritza must do their best to avoid being captured as they learn to trust God and follow His guiding hand in these last days just before the rise of the Antichrist. This fast-paced story is designed to be fascinating. But, don't just take our word for it...

[Note: Baltania is a fictional country within the Eurasian land mass. At one time, it had a communistic past. During a third world war, communism revived in this country as it's armies conquered Europe. Since we do not want to point fingers at any particular country, we will not name this country or coalition of countries.]
