An R-Rated Movie Is Subtly Promoted by Adventures in Odyssey?

In the “Odyssey” cartoon video titled “Escape from the Forbidden Matrix,” an Arnold- Schwarzenegger-like character appears, fighting aliens. Aliens had been attacking Dylan Taylor and Sal Martinez in a jungle, in a virtual reality game. The Odyssey cartoon had scenes highly resembling scenes found in Schwarzenegger’s R-rated (1987) Predator movie, a Hollywood film about a group of people (headed by Schwarzenegger) who have to stop a deadly alien in a jungle. (Information source: Wikipedia.) The Odyssey cartoon, sadly, resembled the R-rated Hollywood film in many points.

Schwarzenegger’s R-rated film showed violence, cussing, and gore. Why would a Christian children’s cartoon promote (in a slightly veiled way) an R-rated Hollywood movie?

  

Star Trek Is Promoted in a Christian Radio Show?

Not only does Adventures in Odyssey promote an R-rated Hollywood film about fighting aliens, but it also promotes the worldly Star Trek TV show and its franchise. In the Odyssey radio episode titled “Hidden In My Heart” ( #321) appears a knock-off of Star Trek. It was meant to give a nod to Star Trek while promoting Bible memorization, but Odyssey compromised the truth with its promotion of Hollywood.

In this Odyssey radio episode, they retitled Star Trek as “Star Trip.” Spock was renamed “Crock.” Klingons (enemy aliens in Star Trek) were named “Ding-Dongs.” The Starship Enterprise was called “Starship Aerobocise.” This is not funny when you consider that Hollywood had never promoted God’s ways. Star Trek, Star Wars, and all Hollywood movies have only promoted sin, rebellion, and filth (to varying degrees of wickedness).    

Millions of children heard these episodes from Adventures in Odyssey. What messages were being brought across to them as they listened to their favorite radio show? Was Hollywood being promoted to them by way of characters in Odyssey? If so, what kind of spiritual fruit does Hollywood have? Is it good or bad, according to the Bible?

Katie Leigh, the voice actor who did the voice of Connie Kendall (in Odyssey), did the voices for characters in worldly movies, TV shows, and violent / occultic video games. Some of her many voice roles include:

Hal Smith did the original voice of John Avery Whittaker. Hal also provided additional voices in the occultic, animated film Lord of the Rings (1978) and also voiced characters in an occultic fantasy arcade gamed called Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp (1991). He played the voice of a few characters (Flintheart Glomgold and Gyro Gearloose) in the Duck Tales (1987-1990) cartoon series. And, Hal acted in a number of Hollywood movies and did the voices for many cartoon characters during his acting career. Duck Tales (1987-1990) had occultic themes throughout it, including a duck that casts spells and uses magic (Magica De Spell), a genie (an Arabic demon), an awakening of a dead mummy in Egypt, and other occultic things.

Children listening to Adventures in Odyssey should be a surprised to find that one of their favorite characters ("Whit," who purports to be a Christian man) is played by an actor who also did the voices of characters in occultic cartoons and other forms of entertainment. Do you see a problem here? The voice actor behind a "Christian" character (Mr. Whittaker) did voices for characters in worldly and ungodly cartoons, games, and ungodly entertainment. If this man was a Christian, that would not change the fact that his voice appears in worldly dramas.

Children (or adults) may then think that Mr. Whittaker, Connie Kendall, and Odyssey (and by default Christians) are promoting the occult and other ungodly things because "Whit's," Connie's (Katie Leigh), and other character's voices can be heard in ungodly, worldly entertainment outside of Odyssey.

Of course, the children during the last century have grown up. But, children today still watch reruns or see videos from the '90s and '80s and 2000s that contain the voices of Katie Leigh, Hal Smith, Andre Stojka (the new "Whit"), and Will Ryan (who did Eugene Meltsner). So, the question then is what should a child believe? The voice of Connie Kendall (Katie Leigh) can be heard in occultic cartoons, violent video games, and worldly movies. A child may then wonder if the occult itself and worldly cartoons really are so bad. But, God's Word is clear what God thinks about the occult and all forms of witchcraft and wizardry.

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (underlining added)

"[9] When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. [10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, [11] Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

[12] For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee." [End quote]

God's Word also says this in Psalm 101:3:

"[3] I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me." [End quote]

Witchcraft Is Promoted in Narnia Books and in Focus on the Family’s Rendition of Narnia

Focus on the Family (the owner of Odyssey) produced an audio dramatic rendition of C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. It is called “Radio Theatre: The Chronicles of Narnia.” This audio recording of Narnia takes over 22-hours to listen to (according to their website) and includes all of the Narnia books. In Lewis’s “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” the character called Lucy uses sorcery (or witchcraft) to cause invisible creatures to appear, including Aslan, the lion. Focus on the Family’s audio rendition of Narnia includes this scene.

In this book, C.S. Lewis had a scene where a little girl (Lucy) is reading from a magic spell-book and causing magical things to start appearing. She even caused Aslan to magically appear, due to the spell she cast to turn invisible things visible. That is concerning, because Aslan is supposed to be a character that represents Christ.

Here is what Aslan told Lucy. It should be very concerning to a Christian. C.S. Lewis writes:

'Then her face lit up till, ... and she ran forward with a little cry of delight and with her arms stretched out. For what stood in the doorway was Aslan himself, the Lion, the highest of all High Kings. And he was solid and real and warm and he let her kiss him and bury herself in his shining mane. And from the low, earthquake-like sound that came from inside him, Lucy even dared to think that he was purring.

"Oh, Aslan," said she, "it was kind of you to come."

"I have been here all the time," said he, "but you have just made me visible."

"Aslan!" said Lucy almost a little reproachfully. "Don't make fun of me. As if anything I could do would make you visible!"

Let's break this scene down and look at what Aslan is saying. Aslan is saying that the magic Lucy used in that magic spell-book can cause Aslan to appear, because he obeys his own "rules." For a Christ-like character to obey the rules of a magic spell-book is very alarming, because children are being taught (by Narnia) that magic spells and spell-books agree with Christ and with Christianity. Nothing can be further from the truth. Magic and sorcery are real and real witches use actual magic spell-books today. God forbids this in His holy Word, the Bible.


Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (underlining added)

What is Focus on the Family (a Christian company) doing promoting this in their Narnia radio drama? Why are they interested in Narnia? And, why is it that former witches and warlocks point out that Narnia is used by neophyte (beginner) witches?

Finishing Up

The late David J. Meyer, a former witch, became a believer in Jesus Christ and left witchcraft. He then exposed the real witchcraft in some popular books for children and adults. David J. Meyer wrote:

“As a former witch, astrologer, and occultist who has been saved by the grace of God, I know that the works of C.S. Lewis are required reading by neophyte witches, especially in the United States and England. This includes The Chronicles of Narnia, because it teaches neophyte, or new witches, the basic mindset of the craft. Isn’t it strange, though, that many “Christian” churches and organizations have used The Chronicles of Narnia as Sunday School curriculum?” [End quote] (Meyer, David J. “The Witchcraft of the Narnia Chronicles.” lasttrumpetministries.org.) (Emphasis added)

We Christians should have nothing to do with witchcraft, fantasy, or Hollywood in any of its forms since God’s Word is clear about these things.

In 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, God had Paul write:

“14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.” [End quote]

And, 2 Corinthians 7:1 says: “[1] Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

1 John 1:3-10 says this profound truth:

“3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”  [End Quote] [Emphasis added]

The only way to have fullness of joy is to fellowship with God, rest in God, and not look to someone or something else.  1 John 1:3 (b) and 4 says: “… and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. [4] And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.”

Isaiah 30:15 (b) says, in part: “For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength:…”

God in Zechariah 1:3-4 says:

“3 Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the LORD of hosts.

4 Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the LORD.”

God is truly all we need

Psalm 16:8 says: “[8] I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.”

Psalm 16:11 says: “[11] Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
