Witchcraft in The Chronicles of Narnia
The Chronicles of Narnia stories are still popular today after their beginning in the 1950s. They have been made into several popular Hollywood films. Many Christians have embraced the books and treasured them along with other writings of C.S. Lewis. But, what is the reason for their continuing popularity? Could it be that they are more than just novels for entertainment?
The late David J. Meyer, a former witch, became a believer in Jesus Christ and left witchcraft. He then exposed the real witchcraft in some popular books for children and adults. David J. Meyer wrote:
“As a former witch, astrologer, and occultist who has been saved by the grace of God, I know that the works of C.S. Lewis are required reading by neophyte witches, especially in the United States and England. This includes The Chronicles of Narnia, because it teaches neophyte, or new witches, the basic mindset of the craft. Isn’t it strange, though, that many “Christian” churches and organizations have used The Chronicles of Narnia as Sunday School curriculum?” [End quote] (Meyer, David J. “The Witchcraft of the Narnia Chronicles.” lasttrumpetministries.org.) (Emphasis added)
{Note: A neophyte is a beginner witch.}
Let’s consider what David J. Meyer said about Narnia.
This article is divided up into three sections.
{1} “The Force” Is a Term Witches Use ... Lucy Casts a Spell ...
{2.} Levitation Is Used in Witchcraft and Narnia.
{3.} Telekinesis Is Found in Both Narnia and Witchcraft.
-- {1.} “The Force” Is a Term Witches Use. Witches Believe in “Black” Magic and in “White” Magic. In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Lucy Casts a Spell Which Makes Invisible Things Visible.
After leaving witchcraft, the late David J. Meyer became a believer in Jesus Christ.
Years after his conversion, David J. Meyer said this in an online article:
‘When real witches have sabats and esbats and meet as a coven, they greet each other by saying "Blessed be", and when they part, they say "The Force be with you." Both sides of this "Force" are Satan. It is not a good side of the force that overcomes the bad side of the force, but rather it’s the blood of Jesus Christ that destroys both supposed sides of the satanic "Force."’ [End quote] (Emphasis added) (Meyer, David
J. "Harry Potter? What Does God Have To Say?" Last Trumpet Ministries
International.)
Likewise, in Star Wars, “the Force” has a “dark side” and a “light side”. Luke Skywalker uses the “good side” of the Force to battle Darth Vader who uses the “dark side” of the Force. In Narnia, Aslan uses magic to fly, to break the spell of eternal winter that the witch cast over Narnia, and for other things. The witch uses magic to battle the “good guys.”
An example how Narnia promotes witchcraft is found in a certain scene from ‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’ (the book). Aslan (the lion character) becomes visible when Lucy casts a spell from a magic spell book. After Lucy cast the spell to make invisible things visible, Aslan appears out of thin air. She is surprised to see the magical lion.
The word "spell," referring to an occult practice, is defined by Merriam-Webster.com as:"... : a spoken word or form of words held to have magic power" [End quote] (Spell, Merriam-Webster.com)
TheFreeDictionary.com said this about a magic spell: "... a verbal formula believed to have magical force; ... " [End quote] (Magic Spell, TheFreeDictionary.com)
TheFreeDictionary.com said this about a magic spell: "... a verbal formula believed to have magical force; ... " [End quote] (Magic Spell, TheFreeDictionary.com)
C.S. Lewis (the author of The Chronicles of Narnia) wrote:
‘ She went up to the desk and laid her hand on the book; her fingers tingled when she touched it as if it were full of electricity. … There was no title page or title; the spells began straight away … They were cures for warts … a spell for taking a swarm of bees. …
[… ]
She turned on and found to her surprise a page with no pictures at all; but the first words were A Spell to make hidden things visible. She read it through to make sure of all the hard words and then said it out loud. And she knew at once that it was working because as she spoke the colours came into the capital letters at the top of the page and the pictures began appearing in the margins. …” [End quote] [Source: Lewis, C.S. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." gutenberg.ca.]
Aslan appears. C.S. Lewis goes on to write:
'Then her face lit up till, ... and she ran forward with a little cry of delight and with her arms stretched out. For what stood in the doorway was Aslan himself, the Lion, the highest of all High Kings. And he was solid and real and warm and he let her kiss him and bury herself in his shining mane. …
"Oh, Aslan," said she, "it was kind of you to come."
"I have been here all the time," said he, "but you have just made me visible."
"Aslan!" said Lucy almost a little reproachfully. "Don't make fun of me. As if anything I could do would make you visible!"
"It did," said Aslan. "Do you think I wouldn't obey my own rules?" ’ [End quote] [Source: Lewis, C.S. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." gutenberg.ca.]
Aslan is saying that his own rules are found in magic spell books. In the occult realm these magic spell books often are called grimores. They can be purchased from witchcraft websites and in occult bookstores. Witches today believe in the power of what they call “magick” (spelled with an “-ick”). They believe that spells, charms, potions, incantations (spells, chants, and magic songs), magic wands, amulets, magic rings, and other items used by sorcerers and witches can somehow control this “Force” (or source of occult power).
C.S. Lewis wrote in a personal letter that Aslan was supposed to be a type of Christ.
In a letter addressed to Mrs. Hook (from 1958), C.S. Lewis wrote:
"[Aslan] is an invention giving an imaginary answer to the question ‘What might Christ become like if there really were a world like Narnia and He choose to be incarnate and die and rise again in that world as He actually has done in ours?’ This is not allegory at all." [End quote] {"Allegory and Symbolism: Deciphering the Chronicles." narniaweb.com. (pdf)}
But, C.S. Lewis had this “Christ” character promote the occult to children. This is not of the nature of Jesus Christ. Rather, what C.S. Lewis is doing is promoting something that is anti-Christ.
“White” witches today use what they call “white magic,” and wizards in the dark arts use “black magic”. Magic (also known as “magick”) is sorcery and witchcraft. The Bible has this to say about such practices…
Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (emphasis added)
“[9] When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
[10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.
[11] Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
[12] For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.” [End quote] [Underlining / Bold font added]
Revelation 21:7-8
“[7] He that overcometh shall inherit all things ; and I will be his God,
and he shall be my son.
[8] But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and
murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all
liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and
brimstone : which is the second death.” [End quote] [Underlining / Bold font added]
-- {2.} Levitation Is Used in Witchcraft and Narnia.
From Merriam-Webster.com, we have this definition for levitation:
"... the act or process of levitating especially : the rising or lifting of a person or thing by means held to be supernatural" [End quote] (Levitation, Merriam-Webster.com)
Tibetan monks were known to levitate while meditating. Levitation is found in eastern mysticism and also in the occult. Tibetan monks were known to have caused massive boulders to levitate into the air. In The Chronicles of Narnia, Aslan has the power to fly. He has no wings. But, he can fly through the air by magic.
Jesus Christ in Mark 13:21-22 said:
“[21] And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ ; or, lo, he is
there ; believe him not :
[22] For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall show signs
and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.” [End quote]
-- {3.} Telekinesis Is Found in Both Narnia and Witchcraft.
Merriam-Webster.com says this about telekinesis:
"... the production of motion in objects (as by a spiritualistic medium) without contact or other physical means" [End quote] (Telekinesis, Merriam-Webster)
Like levitation, telekinesis is the movement of an object without physically touching it. Levitation refers to moving an object upward. Telekinesis refers to moving an object in other directions. In Star Wars, Jedi knights (so-called "good guys") and Sith knights move objects without touching them. A character named Luke Skywalker drew a light saber (a sword that uses a beam of energy to cut things) toward him, using telekinesis.
In Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf and Saruman battled in a tower, and Saruman levitated Gandalf and also used telekinesis to push him through the air. In The Return of the King book (by J.R.R Tolkien, a friend of C.S. Lewis), Gandalf (the so-called “good” wizard) used telekinesis to knock a sword out of the hand of Denethor, (the leader of Gondor). {Note: The article titled “What powers does Gandalf possess?” on quora.com was used to obtain some information for this research.}
In Narnia, Aslan both levitated and moved himself through the air with Lucy and Susan on his back. Again, he had no wings. He flew magically. Paranormal research shows that inanimate objects, such as chairs, have been observed to move without any natural explanation.
A lady called Catt Foy believes with all certainty that physically-impossible actions have taken place in her presence. She said:
“I had a bathroom mirror frost over on a warm afternoon when nobody had taken a shower. I had my large bedroom mirror frost over for no apparent reason. That same mirror one morning literally jumped off the wall, soared over my dresser without knocking anything over and came to rest leaning against the dresser unbroken. The nail and the wire holding it were intact.” (Foy, Catt. “Telekinesis, Psychokinesis and Poltergeist Phenomena,” witchesandpagans.com.)
Witches today claim that they can levitate or use telekinesis. This is sorcery. Again, witches have been known to move objects by way of telekinesis for many years, and long before the time of J.R.R. Tolkien, George Lucas, or C.S. Lewis.
Jesus said this in Matthew 24:23-24:
“[23] Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there ;
believe it not.
[24] For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show
great signs and wonders ; insomuch that, if it were possible, they
shall deceive the very elect.” [End quote]
Books of spells, grimoires (occult books), hexes, charms, wands, magic rings, potions, table-tipping, séances, tarot cards, crystal balls, scrying mirrors, "divination," astrology, sorcery, "telekinesis," etc. All these practices and things are forbidden by God and His Word, the Bible.
Galatians chapter 5 says this in verses 19 through 21:
“[19] Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, [20] idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, [21] envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like : of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”
The answer to sin, temptation, deception, and the power of the occult is look to Jesus Christ, and seek to know Him, and rest in Him, and talk with Him, and read His Word (the Bible), and choose to look to Him for help to forsake the world. This is how one escapes the snares of the devil and the power of the occult and the traps of sin. Knowing Abba Father God, through Jesus Christ, on a deep, personal level is how to escape the power of darkness in all its forms.
