Chapter 1

PDF File: PILGRIM'S JOURNEY:
 BOOK 3: ISLAND QUEST (PDF)
Arriving at the First Destination

Wind billowed the square sails of the galleon Red Jasper as it sailed across the placid sea. The moon’s reflection undulated with the water as the three-masted ship passed across the watery wilderness. Stars covered the night sky like an array of diamonds on black velvet.

The ship had been at sea for five days after leaving the port town of Blanco Risco. Pablo Campo-verde, the captain of the ship, had told his passengers that an island was about a two days voyage from Blanco Risco. He planned to stop at that island before continuing the voyage across the ocean to the mysterious country of Viviente Muerte. That country was the last stop before eight pilgrim knights--Pablo’s passengers--would reach the gate of the Kingdom of Heaven.

“Land ho!” a lookout said from the crow’s nest on the mainmast (i.e. the tallest mast).

[Crow’s nest: This was a platform with a wooden railing on which the lookout, a sailor, had a good view of what lay ahead. The crow’s nest was often located partway up the mainmast.]

A sailor on the half deck (or stern deck) cried up to the lookout, “Henrico, where do you see land?”

[Note: The half deck was at the rear (or stern) of the ship. It rose above the upper gun deck and provided a decent view. The half deck was the top of the aft castle. The aft castle was a raised portion of the deck in the stern (or rear) of an old sailing ship. The forecastle is located near the bow.]

When the lookout had given him the directions, the man on the half deck turned toward the south east and drew out a spyglass (i.e. hand-held telescope). Sure enough, he could see land. An island rose up from the ocean, resembling a grey rock covered with dark-green vegetation. A mountain rose high above the jungle-cloaked land mass. It appeared to be about three leagues away. [Note: One league is about 3 miles in distance.]

Chapter 11

(Chapter 12 will soon be posted up. It is the last chapter in Book 2.)

The Pursuit Through the Forest

Several miles away from the pilgrims, five horses with riders were cantering through the woods. The men riding them were dressed in black robes and were equipped with longbows, swords, and arrow quivers. Barbute helmets with Y-shaped facial openings protected their heads, and coats of mail were concealed under their dark robes.

[Barbute: This was a 15th century helmet which often had a Y-or-T-shaped facial opening in the front for breathing and visibility. Some had an arched opening, but the opening was still smallish compared to that of other helmet styles. Unique among the barbute designs, those with a Y-shaped opening had a projection to guard the nose.]      [Canter: The pace of a horse that is slower than a gallop but faster than a trot. It is the medium speed of a horse.]

The foremost rider swore under his breath and thought to himself: ‘I will kill those men for speaking strange and perverse things to the town of Rebellion. I will also kill them to avenge the deaths of all who lived in the town. It is in ruins a blackened heap of rubble thanks to them and their God. And Elihu, my good friend, died because of them. Those pilgrims shall not escape my wrath!’

“Ahaziah,” said one of the horsemen cantering behind him.

“What is it, Jehoiakim?” Ahaziah Bronze-smith said as he turned his head.

“I believe we are not far from our prey,” Jehoiakim Iron-fist said with an evil glint in his eyes.

“You’re right,” Ahaziah said, smiling wickedly. “I will make those pilgrims suffer a cruel death for all the evil they have done. And, Markus Christian shall be the first to go.”

The Hill of Difficulty

A very steep, rocky hill rose up high above the 15 pilgrims. The forest bordered it but stopped at its lower end, leaving the hill bare of trees. The pilgrims had just emerged from the forest and found themselves in open ground, staring up at a new challenge.

Chapter 9

The Storm at Sea

The captain rushed over to the port side of the caravel and tossed an empty, sealed barrel into the water. It was his version of an emergency flotation device. Markus prayed silently as he bent down on the upper deck and scooted across the deck toward the captain. The wind was tugging hard at his hair and clothes, but he continued moving. He wanted to help anyone who was in danger of drowning.

Chapter 7

Fleeing from the Guards

(This is a depiction of a lava-filled trench.)
The four pilgrim knights didn’t wait a second longer. With their flaming swords in hand, Markus and his friends sprinted down the hall at full speed. And, their foes accelerated, in pursuit. Steel sabatons (i.e. armored shoes) pounded the stone floor and metallic footfalls echoed off the dungeon walls. Click. Clack. Click. Clack. The sound grew louder.

Chapter 5

Preaching in the Town Square

“You men and women of Insipidity, God is lovingly calling out to you with a message of warning,” Markus Christian said loudly as he stood on a wooden speaking platform in the middle of the large, town square. “Judgment is about to fall on your town for the evil of your doings–your idolatry, blasphemy, adultery, and rejecting God’s messengers, and for seeking to kill His prophets.”

Villagers were gathered around the wooden platform in all directions. Men, women, and children of all ages were watching Markus, Henry, and Andrew standing on the platform and speaking. Many spectators were hissing and booing. But, others were paying close attention. As this was taking place, four of the pilgrims stood at the rear of the crowd, feeling nervous about what might happen next.

Chapter 3

Knights Come

Just then, a sound came from some yards away, and Markus turned his head to see many knights with gold-colored armor charging toward the giant. They had drawn swords and raised shields. Each wore a close helm with a lowered visor. [Close helm: See Chapter 1 for a description of a close helm.]

The giant turned to face them and removed his foot from Markus’s chest. As he did, Markus attempted to stand to his feet, but he felt wounded, and it was painful to move.

Fifty golden knights began attacking the giant with determination and strength. As they struck him in the legs and from behind, the giant swung at them with his hammer, but it bounced off their round shields. He tried his scythe, but it was not as useful in close quarters. So, he soon began to retreat, feeling slightly overwhelmed by the 50 men-at-arms.
[Man-at-arms: A heavy armed and armored medieval soldier or knight.]

Chapter 1

Introduction

Markus Christian and his friends had set out on a journey toward Heaven in the first part of this story. Along the way, they had met up with some other pilgrims who assisted them in fighting many giants, and overcoming obstacles. They had passed through dangerous places, a deadly swamp, underground passageways, dark forests, and on giant-infested land.

All the while, they had seen God’s power manifested in various ways to assist them in overcoming foes too great for them. The power of darkness was manifested in various ways in the first part, but in this second part, you will see how these pilgrims in shining armor face new challenges, new foes, and deadly enemies. You will see how they either rely on God or turn their own way. You will see how grace will give them the power to overcome all obstacles. Or, by rejecting God’s grace, you will see how some of them forsake the truth and sadly perish.

Join us as we present to you the further adventures of Markus Christian, Andrew Strong-heart, Henry Willow, and their companions in Pilgrim’s Journey: Part 2: Faith Challenged.

Azul Cielo Mountains

After successfully repelling the attacks of the giants (See Chapter 8 of Part 1), the band of seven pilgrim knights continued walking down the path through the dense, hardwood forest. Dappled sunlight gleamed off their silvery armor as they traveled for some distance beneath the leafy canopy of oak, beech, and maple trees. Several hours later, the uneventful day came to a close and the men settled down for the night.

The second day passed by, uneventful, and saw them put more miles under their feet. But, on the third day, the pilgrims noticed that the path was climbing a hill toward a mountain range, which rose high above the surrounding terrain, majestic and beautiful.

Chapter 7

Journeying Off the Path

The small group of 8 men merrily walked down the wide path leading toward the town of Hyper-Grace. In less than half an hour, the men reached the outskirts of what proved to be a large community of about 300 thousand. There were many banks, stores, shops, churches, and businesses in the town, spread out over a large area. Horse-drawn carriages jostled through the city and competed with the crowds of people walking about.

Chapter 5

Continuing the Journey

The travelers left the town of Worldly-Pleasure through a large, hardwood gate and continued on the narrow path which wound through farm fields. A castle perched on a distant hill watched over the town and fields like a cold-hearted dragon. Red and black flags snapped in the wind from tall poles on its towers. To Markus, the flags resembled the forked tongue of a serpent. He shuddered slightly as he thought of the evil that lurked within that fortress.

Before long, the farmland was now replaced by a dense forest. Birds chirped in the tree tops and sang cheerful melodies. Dappled sunlight fell on the path and sparkled off the silver-colored armor of the three travelers. After five miles had passed, the forest gave way to farm fields. And, a walled town in the center of a valley caught their attention. Within the middle of the town rose a high hill with a small castle atop it. And, surrounding the town, imposing and solid, a wall with crenellations, towers, and catapults rose high into the air.

Chapter 3

The Battle with Unbelief

The giant suddenly swung his large battle axe at Henry Willow, and the heavy blade struck him in the breastplate. It knocked him off his feet and sent him crashing to the floor. His breastplate kept him from receiving a wound, but it didn’t protect him as well as his shield would have.

Markus ran toward the locked door and tried to open it, but it wouldn’t budge. He was about to strike it with his sword, when Andrew shouted, “Lookout, Markus!”

Just in time, he saw the heavy, axe blade swinging toward him, and he held up his shield to block it. The axe struck the shield with a resounding clang. At the same time, the giant drew a hammer from a holster and suddenly slammed it into Markus’s sword. Markus’s grip on his sword was somewhat weak, and the weapon flew out of his hand. Then, in a quick and fluid motion, the giant reached out an armored gauntlet toward Markus Christian and ripped his shield from his arms. Now, he was defenseless except for his breastplate, helmet, sturdy belt, and protective boots.

[Gauntlet: A jointed piece of hand armor that covers the outside of a knight's gloves.]

Chapter 1

The Escape

It was sometime shortly after the year 1500. In a valley surrounded by high hills sat a small, Medieval town. Wood smoke wafted up through brick chimneys and into the night air like the breath of a dragon. A man carrying a torch walked down one of the crooked, twisting streets which meandered through the length of the town. Walking beside him, his friend whispered, “We need to make sure to run fast once the time comes.”

A pointy, church steeple jutted into the starry sky, and a five-storied, stone jailhouse rose high above the roofs of the town’s half-timbered buildings. Atop the jailhouse stood a sentry armed with a crossbow. The small town of Mankind (in the country of Humanity) was fast asleep, except for some night watchmen, who walked along the top of the town’s fortified outer walls. These few sentries were armed with crossbows, swords, and halberds.

(Halberd (definition): It is a Medieval weapon which combines an axe blade with a pick on a long handle. A spearhead appears above the axe head on the halberd.)

Just then, the hinges of one of the town gates began to slowly squeak open. When the gate was wide enough to admit a person, it stopped swinging, and two men appeared in the light of a torch one was carrying. The orange light cast shadows all around them and revealed their concerned facial expressions. For half a minute, they stood still, looking out at the farm fields which had begun to sprout. Beyond the fields lay a dense, dark forest consisting of maple, oak, and other hardwood trees.
