Chapter Twenty-Three

PART 23: “Jungle Surprise”

___________________________________________________

The Southeast Asian jungle at night was not a place Hu wanted to be. Having traveled through the Yunnan jungle for a few days, to escape persecution, Hu longed for a place to sleep in where no poisonous snakes would be found, and where no communist soldiers would threaten his life. But, he knew that the small group needed to continue their journey, since the Chinese government was aware of their last position.

Hu suddenly tripped on a thick root, and fell to the ground. “Ah,” he said as he impacted the soil.

His friend, Cheng, a 42-year-old Chinese man, reached down with a free hand and Hu took it. With Cheng’s assistance, the weary 24-year-old found his footing again. They were now walking on the side of a steep hill, and the ground was somewhat slippery, having been rained on recently.

Just twenty minutes ago, several columns of fire had fallen from the sky, passing down through the forest canopy, without burning any trees, and had consumed many Chinese soldiers on the ground. It was a miracle of Biblical proportions, which had astounded Hu, Cheng, and Quang, who had been traveling in the jungles of Yunnan Province, in southern China. The soldiers had found them using heat-sensing technology and were about to arrest them. But, God’s miraculous intervention had delivered the small group of Asian Christians. [Read about these events in Part 17 and Part 18.]

The men continued down the trail, taking it easy, to avoid slipping.

They had flashlights, but none of them dare turned them on, since they knew Chinese soldiers might still be searching the forest for them. Carrying backpacks, Hu and his two older friends trekked down a series of animal trails, trusting that God would protect them from poisonous snakes, just as He had done earlier. Hu had been bitten by a chain viper, but the wound had miraculously been healed, without inflaming. Mark chapter 16 and all of the Bible had brought comfort to Hu as he thought about the miracles God had done for him and for people in the Bible times.

“Hu,” Cheng said, “why do you think God would send fire from heaven to consume those Chinese soldiers, who sought to kill us, but people in China are being tortured and killed because they are Christians?”

Hu turned back toward the 42-year-old man and said: “There are many people who suffer for Christ’s sake, but Jesus did tell His disciples that if they are persecuted in one city, they are to leave and go to a different city. And, Elisha and Elijah both saw God deliver them from evil people who sought to kill them. Elisha called blindness on them, and Elijah called fire from heaven upon his enemies, who were very hardened and calloused against God.”

“That is interesting,” Cheng said as he walked beside Hu, careful to avoid rocks and protruding roots.

God doesn’t respect one person over another,” Hu continued. “In the book of Romans, chapter 2, verse 11, I remember it says: ‘For there is no respect of persons with God.’ God has no favorite sons or daughters. He loves us all in the same way as He loves Jesus Christ. Jesus spoke of this in John chapter 17, verses 22 and 23. He said: ‘[22] And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: [23] I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.’.”

“God loves us the way He loves Jesus?” Cheng said. “That is amazing. I didn’t realize that was in the Gospel of John. I don’t know if I even read John chapter 17.”

“When I read it, it seemed to jump out at me from the page,” Hu said. “Abba Father God loves us the way He loves His Only Begotten Son, Jesus.”

Suddenly, a snapping sound came from the jungle fifteen feet away. Hu, Cheng, and Quang turned quickly to the left and tried to see what had caused the sound, but thick bushes and dark patches blocked their view up the hill.

“I’ve finally found you,” a voice said in Chinese from a bush. Then, a shadowy figure pushed his way through and a Chinese soldier stepped into a patch of moonlight, which had penetrated the forest canopy.

Hu felt his stomach tighten.

“Taxi”

(Mercedes-Benz Viano taxi van.

The Mercedes-Benz Viano taxi van pulled into the parking lot of a budget hotel. Five friends – Karl, Inga, Elise, Abdul, and Toben – all disembarked from the van, grateful to feel the pavement under their feet and fresh air in their lungs. While the men carried items such as wallets and keys, and the women carried purses, none of them had brought items for traveling, such as suitcases. [Read how Karl escaped a communist prison in Part 21.]

Toben pulled out a bank card and handed it to the taxi driver. A minute later, he was given a receipt with his card. The Nigerian then pulled out his wallet and handed the driver 1,500 rubles* in paper cash. [* That would be roughly $50 U.S. dollars. By the time this story takes place, the dollar would have ceased to exist, since the U.S. would have collapsed by then.]

“That’s a tip. Thanks for taking the time to drive us,” Toben said as he placed the cash in the man’s hand.

“Anytime,” the man said, smiling. After removing 420 rubles* and placing it into a locked cash box, he stuffed the remaining money into his wallet. [* Or, about $14 U.S. dollars.]

He leaned toward Toben and said quietly, “By the way, may I ask you a personal question?”

“Yes,” Toben said.

“Just out of curiosity; are you people underground Christians?”

Hearing the driver ask Toben that question, Karl felt some fear attacking him, but he chose to give it to God.

“We are,” Toben said with peace in his heart, knowing that this man could turn him in at any time.

“You people are bold,” the taxi driver said. “I heard some of you praying in the back. I thought you might be Lutheran, but then it seemed like you spoke about

conducting home Bible studies. I know that those things are illegal. But, why are you not afraid of getting caught? Do you realize that someone could turn you in and get paid 1,800 rubles* every week in food credit in addition to 2,700 rubles* in discount on monthly utility bills?” [* These amounts are roughly equal to $60 and $90 U.S. dollars, respectively.]

Toben felt some fear attack his stomach along with several other members of the team, including Karl. But, Toben quickly gave it to God before saying, “Sir, you could turn me in to the police, but you would miss the blessings of Heaven if you walked in that path.”

The driver was taken aback. He said: “Blessings of Heaven? What do you mean?”

“If you turn me in and continue living in a direction that is earthly, looking forward to saving money any way you can, you will miss the blessings God bestows from Heaven,” Toben said. “You would also miss the true life that Jesus Christ spoke of in the New and Old Testament books of the Bible, unless you do something simple.”

“What is that?” the driver said leaning toward him.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, repent from your sins, and make Him your personal Savior and Lord,” Toben said. “Only the blood of Jesus has the power to make you and I clean and pure, and to give us access to Heaven.”

The driver, Arvid Aagaard, appeared to be deep in thought. Toben’s words reminded Arvid of something he had heard a long time ago when he was a kid. A Sunday school teacher had told him and other children in the class about salvation through Jesus Christ. Using a green felt board, she had been sharing with the children about the life of Jesus and all the miracles He did.

tomb with stone
(A tomb with a stone. Click for source.)
On a certain Sunday, she had placed a felt representation of a cross with Jesus Christ stretched out on it. Then, she had replaced it with an empty cross to signify Jesus being buried in a tomb. What stood out most to young Arvid was the felt tomb with a round stone over its entrance. The stone had rolled away, and Jesus had come forth alive, showing that He had the power over death and over the devil.

But, many years had passed since, and he had scoffed at the Bible and at Christians. But now, as his life was starting to get more difficult and his finances were tighter than ever, due to the financial problems of Europe, crop failures, and high inflation, Arvid felt the stirring of a desire to listen to the Nigerian man.

“But, what about the authorities? If I become a Christian, like you, and hide out from the authorities, won’t I eventually get caught? I don’t want to be tortured. I’d rather die than be tortured,” the man said, nervously. “I’ve heard stories of life in the concentration camps.”

“There is no need to fear torture,” Toben said, “because with God leading you by His Spirit, you will be safe from all harm, and He will provide for you and deliver you. And, those who do go through physical afflictions, Jesus will give them rest through it all and deliver them as they turn to Him with all their hearts. There is no need to fear, sir. God will be with you forever, if you turn to Jesus Christ for salvation.”

Arvid placed a hand up to his chin, in thought.

“It says in 2 Corinthians chapter 1 that God our Father is the One who gives grace and peace. And, it goes on to say, in the next verses, that God is the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, and that He comforts us in all difficulties. Of course, we need to look to Him and rest in Him to receive it,” Toben said.

“I want to be comforted,” the man said. “I feel like my neighborhood is starting to fall apart. There are frequent knife fights, looting, and drugs proliferating in my end of Oslo. The police are starting to avoid certain areas of the city where high drug activity is taking place, and I think it’s really due to corruption on the part of the department. I wish I could move to a better apartment, but I just can’t afford it on my meager income as a taxi driver.”

“Jesus will help you,” Toben said, “and will provide a better apartment and a better place to live if you turn to Him with all your heart, and trust only in Him for salvation. Philippians chapter 4, verse 19, says: ‘But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.’ But, the most important thing Jesus can give you is eternal life and eternal salvation. Hell is a place of eternal torment that you do not want to go to. That is why Jesus has been calling out to you. Will you receive Jesus into your heart and His sacrificial gift to pay for your sins?

Arvid scratched his chin in deep thought. After a few more seconds passed, he said, “I’ll think about it. Well, I should be leaving. My boss will expect me back in Oslo in about an hour and thirty minutes from now. Bye.”

Arvid shut the electric window and pulled the taxi van out of the parking lot. The van pulled onto a lightly-traveled street and drove off, disappearing behind a brick building further down the way.

“I hope and pray that the driver will turn to Jesus,” Inga said, approaching Toben from his left.

“I do too,” Toben said, exhaling.

“We don’t know if he will turn us in or not,” Karl said, but I think he will think about what you said to him, Toben.”

(A smartphone. Click for source.)
Suddenly, a ringing sound came from Elise’s purse. She unzipped the bag and drew out her smart phone. Then, her heart leaped. The caller was her husband, Felix. She wondered to herself if she should answer it or not. She remembered how God had showed Toben that Felix had turned in Karl and had planned on turning in the rest of the Bible study group, which Karl led.

“Who is it?” Inga said.

“It’s my husband,” Elise said, swallowing. “Should I answer it?”

“What does God show you?” Karl said.

Elise swallowed again and closed her eyes, while the phone continued to ring. At last, it went silent and the phone began recording a voice message from Felix.

“I am hearing God tell me to not answer the phone and to even get rid of it,” Elise said after half a minute had passed. “I haven’t ever thought I’d need to get rid of this phone. It has all my contacts and all my personal notes I’ve stored on it during the three years I’ve had it. And, it’s the only way I can contact my husband.”

“Elise,” Inga said, “if God is showing you to get rid of it, shouldn’t you do that? God is our loving Father. Doesn’t He know what is best for us?”

“You’re right,” Elise said, with a tear trickling down her cheek, “but it is hard to just say goodbye to my husband. I don’t even know where God is leading us, but it sure seems that we won’t be living like we did before. We won’t be going to work because our names will be on a wanted list, if they aren’t already on such a list. We won’t be eating out at any restaurants. I mean, we could only afford to eat out once every three months, since prices have been going up and up.”

“I know how you feel,” Inga said. “It really is hard to forsake your own husband and your life in Oslo, but we have to let go of this world. I memorized Mark 8:34-36. It says: ‘[34] And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. [35] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. [36] For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?’

(Click the image to enlarge it.)
Elise wiped away a tear and nodded slowly as she looked at Inga’s caring face. “You are right, Inga. I do need to let go of the world and my husband. I remember hearing Karl teach on a verse in Luke 14. I can’t remember what verse it was, but it said something about how if we don’t hate our own life, we cannot be Jesus Christ’s disciples.”

“That was Luke 14, verses 26 and 27,” Karl said as he approached the women. “Would you like to hear it? I memorized it.”

“I would,” Elise said, looking at him.

Karl said, “Jesus said in Luke 14:26 and 27: ‘[26] If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [27] And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.’

"Jesus is not teaching us to hate people, because elsewhere Jesus said we ought to love our enemies. He is teaching that we should forsake our plans and goals, and seek His instead. Sometimes, we might have to forsake people if those people would keep us from doing God’s will.”

“That is very sobering,” Elise said. With conviction she added, “I do want to serve God. I don’t want to pursue my own will. I decide that right now, like I never have before. I want God’s best will for my life. His will is best.”

“That’s right,” Abdul said, joining in the conversation. “I had a hard choice to make when I became a Christian. All my Muslim friends I made in Norway, and my own brother, despised me for turning to Jesus, but I was willing to lose them for Jesus’ sake. Jesus is my best Friend. He meets my needs.”

“That is hard what you went through, Abdul. But, there is no better friend that Jesus,” Karl said.

After a pause, Karl said, “We should seek Abba God about where next to go, whether we should stay here, or go somewhere else.”

“Brother,” Toben said, “I am hearing God tell me that we can stay at this hotel, and then leave where He sends us tomorrow.”

Karl waited for a few moments before he said, “God is telling me the same.”

“Then, let’s go,” Abdul said, leading the way toward the main entrance, which was flanked by potted flowers.

[Note: God showed this writer that in the future, the ruble would be equal to about $30 US dollars from the year 2017. In the future, the ruble will be the basis of the currency used by European and Central Asian countries. A neo-soviet Russia will dominate Europe and Central Asia. A powerful China will dominate the Far East and Southeast Asia. India will be under the control of Muslim caliphates as Hinduism is pushed back by Islam. But, centuries ago, there was a Muslim caliphate in India called the Mughal Empire. These are things God has been showing this writer. I encourage you to seek God about this if you’re curious.]

EXCERPT from Part 24:

... Carrying their backpacks or purses, the group reached the sidewalk bordering the nearby street. Karl noticed a grey BMW M760 sedan parked under a tree. A man was sitting in the car looking in their direction. ‘What was he doing here at this time of night?’ Karl wondered. The man pressed something on his belt and spoke into a small speaker, which was hidden from view.  Suddenly, he opened the door and stepped out. ...
